Stop Romanticizing Your Lack of Mental Health

We live in a world where sometimes the more busy you are, the more important you are. The more unavailable you are, the more admirable it is because it means you have an awesome job, or an interesting life. This line of thinking often leads to stress being an indicator that you are doing great.

I mean think about it, there is always that one friend who at dinners or parties arrives late saying ‘OMG I’m so stressed’ or ‘OMG I’m so tired, I work so much’.

Funny enough, you can ask whoever, but the majority of time I am that friend. And trust me when I tell you that sometimes I have been proud of it, except that now I am not.

Now it may be normal to stress over work or school, what it’s not okay it’s to not do something about it. Several breakdowns later and thanks to therapy I have now the tools to beat stress before it gets too dangerous. However, the more I talk about this openly, the more I find people suffering with anxiety or depression without even knowing. Why? Because we live in a world that keeps romanticizing these kind of things.

We find memes about suicide funny when it comes to school or work. I have even seen movies where the character’s mental crisis highlights the comedy in the film. (Remember that episode of friends when Phoebe had a heart attack because of stress?) We all aspire to be the person dressing fancy talking on the cellphone all the time, it looks cool. No wonder we find it embarrassing to admit we feel bad when we do, let alone admit we have ever been to the shrink or psychologist.

Being stressed and worried all the time is not okay and I can’t stretch this enough, because having a mental breakdown is definitely not something that should be laughed about. It is not shameful to admit something is wrong with you.

You may not be okay. And that’s okay.

This matter is more worrying than we think. That’s why here are some daily simple ‘symptoms’ that may indicate you may need to look for professional help regarding this matter. There may be more but I tried writing down the ones that I personally never noticed as wrong when it came to myself.

Now all of these can be consequences of different causes, this is why I would recommend seeking professional help to get a correct diagnose. (Google or Reddit doesn’t count as professional). Even if you just feel like you need to talk to someone throughly about something that bugs you every now and then, therapy can be a great option for you.

Investing in your mental health can be one of the best decisions you can take. Don’t be afraid to speak up and admit that you need help because you deserve to be okay, and trust me, you can be.
