Why I Decided to Pursue a Data Science Immersive Bootcamp

Working a little over a decade in the biotech field I naturally gravitated to automating and optimizing repetitive task when it’s data related.

The majority of my career, data is made of spreadsheets or text files and automating things was coded in Microsoft Office VBA Excel. Sure it was cool to watch the screen flicker as it ran non-recorded macros but it wasn’t efficient.

As the years continued on, data became bigger and bigger. Like 1GB size files with millions of rows big! Out of date programs like excel cannot handle the millions of rows, leading zeros in spread sheets, and just opening the file was incredibly laggy and troublesome. Bioinformatics started to become the trend for data analysis. They used python scripts and running scripts in terminal or command prompt to extract the data and looking at trends and r squares and p values.

That’s when I knew, to get with the times I needed to learn python so I can understand what they were doing. Also, I kept hearing in the news about AI and machine learning and how our phones can detect made and miss basketball shots, and our watches were on the verge detecting if someone has certain heart conditions.

That’s when I decided it’s time to upgrade my knowledge in data and science. My background and education is mainly in science, engineering, and some computer science. I have to take care my family and time is short, so getting a Master or PhD is out of the question. Those programs are just too long and the opportunity cost is too high.

So that’s when I decided to do a Data Science Immersive Program/Bootcamp. It was a toss up between that and Javascript Bootcamp. But ultimately, this one made the most sense as it relates to what I was already doing, but also gives me more doors to open into other sectors of healthcare and computer science.
