I Have Questions About The Quantum Realm

Warning: As this is a movie review, there will be spoilers for Ant-Man & Wasp: Quantumania

When watching a post End Game movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I don’t expect the plot or logic involved to be fully cohesive, especially if that movie involves time travel or multiverses, but when watching Ant-Man & Wasp: Quantumania, a lot of questions about the Quantum Realm came to mind. And I have a theory that explains most of my questions.

My first couple of questions are in relation to the resources in the Quantum Realm and the societies that formed there. For example, in the beginning of the movie, we can see Janet Van Dyne scooping and drinking water. She doesn’t even have any gear to use to breathe. So, if the Quantum Realm is smaller than atoms, how can she breathe and where did the water come from? There are also so many creatures and people and food in the Quantum Realm when it’s supposed to be smaller than atoms. This wouldn’t make sense based on the information we have. And also, why is there land and gravity in a place that shouldn’t have mass?

Something that never made sense to me with the Ant-Man movies is how accessing the Quantum Realm with Pym Particles is even possible if they just shrink the space between atoms. In order to reach a location in the subatomic scale, you’d need to be able to shrink the atoms themselves. And if you’re able to shrink to get there, why wouldn’t you be able to just grow to return, even if you do end up in a different time and place than when you left? These are questions I always had, but something from this movie was why Scott and Cassie were feeling the effects of being large when technically they weren’t large. They were still really really small.

Ant-Man grown to be giant in Kang’s citadel in the Quantum Realm

In the second Ant-Man movie, the plot revolved around trying to travel to the Quantum Realm to retrieve Janet, and that makes sense. Hank and Hope would want to see their loved one and Janet would want to escape. What doesn’t make sense is in the post credit scene, Janet was involved in an experiment where Scott was collecting samples from the Quantum Realm and returning. Using the knowledge from this latest addition, why was Janet fine with sending Scott into the Quantum Realm, but not fine with interacting with the Quantum Realm in this movie? Wouldn’t sending Scott in and communicating with the Quantum Realm then attract the attention of Kang?

My theory that explains most of these questions is that there are a theoretical infinite number of alternate realities that can be reached by scaling up or down. This would mean that if, while in the Quantum Realm, someone shrinks past the safe limits, they’d reach another more different world, smaller than the Quantum Realm. This also means that there could be a universe larger than the prime MCU universe. This also explains why there’s matter and mass in the Quantum Realm, because they’d have the same elements as the prime universe, except smaller. This would also mean that not only do Pym Particles change the distance between atoms but change the distance within atoms.

The reason why it’s difficult to grow in the Quantum Realm is that once you shrink past a certain threshold, the atoms make up whatever was shrunken reorient themselves to be on the scale of the current universe, making it hard to grow to the next larger world. As we’ve seen, this can be counteracted by someone on the other side sending a signal to anchor the particles in the scale of their source universe.

This will probably never be confirmed in the MCU because the writers don’t like to give details (or even think of details) when doing quantum plotlines, but that’s the only way it seems to me how it can make sense in the MCU. What are your thoughts on the movie and what were your own questions about this movie?
