Are Climate Change Summits Worth it?

Do they have a real impact on environmentalism?

Politicians and policymakers from all over the world convene in a so-called, “Green” Summit to discuss new environmental laws and have opportunities for activists to participate in a lively discussion. One example of this conference is the annual Conference of the Parties Summit or COP.

The conference brings “the Parties” or governments that have signed the UN Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) to discuss solutions to climate change. It is hosted by a different country each year and the first COP1 was held in Berlin, Germany in 1995.

COP26 marks the 26th year of this summit which took place in Glasgow, Scotland, in November 2021. It was scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November 2020, but the event was postponed due to the pandemic. The “pre-COP,” a preparatory meeting, took place in Milan, Italy, from 30 September to 2 October 2021.

The Paris Agreement played an important role in COP summits. It is an international treaty signed by almost all countries in the world at COP21 in Paris in 2015. There was a lot of attention drawn to this particular agreement when Donald Trump announced the United States of America would withdraw from the Paris Agreement in June 2017.
