Will 40 Ounces Really Lead You to Freedom?

If you only knew all the love that I found, it’s hard to keep my soul on the ground.

Sublime, what a beautiful word and an unforgettable band.

A band that didn’t last long enough.

I’ve been listening to Sublime since I was 16 years old. That was 2 years before they gained commercial success and stardom.

They were from Long Beach, California. A stone’s throw from my hometown.

Back in the day of 1994, we could frequent this little dive concert bar with a fake ID.

It was in downtown San Pedro, California. A place where I would also walk into a liquor store in my high school cheerleading outfit to buy wine coolers or Boone’s farm, maybe some Mickeys, depending on how I felt.

Of course, we had to enter from the back door, speakeasy-style.

Sublime was just getting started, playing small venues around Southern California. My friend had a bootleg CD that she acquired from her older brother.

We used to cruise around San Pedro on Friday and Saturday nights and this would be our new CD to listen to.

Thank goodness for my friend’s older brother, because after we were quite familiar with the band, we were let in on a priceless tip of information.

They would be playing at that little dive concert bar I mentioned. And, score, we could get in with a fake ID.

Where would we get a fake ID? He said it didn’t really matter because the bouncers at the door rarely checked the “chicks” IDs. He told us to just bring anything that resembled a legit ID.
