The Best TV Shows of the 2010s

Hari Vutukuru — The Best TV Shows Of The 2010s

Regardless of how you felt about the way the show ended, there’s no denying the fact that Game of Thrones was one of the most popular and impactful television shows of the 2010s. A fantasy epic about politics, revenge, and dragons, this show mixed realism and fantasy in the best way possible. The show was full of plenty of ambitious and standout set pieces, but the real draw was the acting and the way each actor brought their characters to life, making even the vilest and cruel characters interesting.

Based on the Coen Brothers popular movie from the 90s that shares the name, is easily one of the best television shows and one of the best anthology series to emerge in the 2010s. While not a remake of the 1996 dark comedy, the TV show takes a lot of similar themes and turns them into a 10 episode television season. The show takes place in Coen country and used many popular Coen actors such as Billy Bob Thorton and Michael Stuhlbarg, with some character even directly evoking characters from the original movie. Each season tells it’s own unique story with connections to previous seasons sprinkled throughout.

Author Thomas Harris’s popular Hannibal Lecter novels have been adapted to film a few times, but the TV series set out to tell a slightly different story. This show acted somewhat as a prequel to the stories the world seems to know so well, introducing Hannibal and FBI profiler Will Graham before Graham sends Hannibal to prison for killing and eating his prey. Just like in the movies and books, Will has Hannibal help him solve crimes, all while Hannibal is getting away with what he’s known best for — preparing a killer meal.

Brooklyn 99 is a more typical work sitcom, co-created by one of the lead writers of and the creator of Parks and Recreation , but it still stands out as one of the best shows of the past 10 years. Focusing on a Brooklyn based NYPD detective squad, this show really shines by focusing on its outrageous characters, such as the main character Jake Peralta, who is obsessed with and boy bands. The show actually got canceled on its original channel, FOX, but was quickly brought back to life by NBC for continued seasons.

The Leftovers is based on author Tom Perrotta’s novel of the same name and was brought to life by both him and famed LOST showrunner Damon Lindelof. The premise is simple: 2% of the world’s population suddenly vanished into thin air without any reasonable explanation from either science or religion. While this may be the premise, don’t expect to just get answers. The show only uses this as a way to drive the plot, with the show actually being about the characters (based in a small town in upstate New York), their relationships with one another, and how they’re coping with the sudden and unexplained loss of their loved ones. While there was only one book, the show continued on past the original story, with many even claiming that it only got better after the first season. The Leftovers chose to end its critically acclaimed run after only 3 seasons, but it ended up being some of the most emotionally intense television to ever be made.
